Annual General Meeting and election of our new club committee

Two weeks ago on Monday 24 August 2015, we held our Annual General Meeting.

The President acknowledged the long and dedicated service to club from two outgoing committee members – Lance Corby and Robert Malcolm, both of whom have contributed to the club in varied ways over many many years – thanks guys!

Our new committee was elected, then we heard updates on:

  • the upcoming new court construction at the Greenvale Rec Centre,
  • a ‘pilot’ coaches development program being developed in-house, and
  • new club branded hoodies (grey are for the club officials so you can see us when you need us on game day – black are for club members and supporters), which you can purchase through your team manager.

Please read the minutes and attachments or contact any of the new committee members for further information.

Finals kick off this weekend

Updated …. apologies for confusing people …

All the best to our teams in finals over the next three weeks. north brisbane basketball North Brisbane Basketball north brisbane basketball North Brisbane Basketball

We have three weeks of finals:

  1. This week parents still need to score and keep time.
  2. Next week official scorekeepers will be on the bench marking the scoresheet. A representative from each team will still be required to operate the clock – please agree with the other team beforehand, whether you will share the task for the whole game or swap over at half time.
  3. Grand finals there will be an official scorekeeper and a referee on the scorebench.

A reminder that if you are on the scorebench, you are undertaking an important job – please:

  • concentrate and do everything you can to eliminate potential distractions, and
  • be impartial and refrain from barracking for your team.

Timing rules are the same this week as they have been for all fixtured rounds, that is:

  • Two time outs, each of one (1) minute duration, are allowed per team for each 20 minute half.
  • No time outs are allowed in the last two (2) minutes of the first half.
  • Clock does not stop in the first half at all.
  • Clock stops in the last three (3) minutes of the second half, but only for:
    • time outs
    • substitutions
    • foul shots.

Please respect the job of those on the scorebench and allow them to focus on the game – including refraining from approaching the bench to request the clock be stopped – and refreshing yourself and your team’s supporters of the timing rules (refer to Broadmeadows website).

Trainee referees

Over the next few weeks there will be new trainee referees on the courts, wearing white or green shirts. Some of them are from our club which is fantastic – they are giving back to our sport, while increasing their own knowledge of the game.

Referees are an essential part of our game.

You are reminded that:

  • We all need to show patience and understanding – they are learning just like our players.
  • Coaches and spectators must not talk directly to trainee referees wearing white or green shirts.
  • Coaches may only respectfully talk to fully qualified referees (in striped shirts) or to the Referee Supervisor.
  • There is zero tolerance on any abuse of any referee and severe penalties will be applied by Basketball Victoria for any reported infringement of these rules.

Please let your coach, players and spectators know, so there is full understanding by everyone and we can be proud of the behaviour of members of our club.

Renew your Working with Children Check online from early April

From early April 2014, cardholders who are required to renew their WWC Check will no longer need to go to Australia Post to lodge a paper form and present their current card.

Training and our heat policy

Heat%20Exhaustion%202[1]Welcome back to the new year. As you may know, our competition starts again this weekend. Refer to the Greenvale teams page for your match times for Saturday.

Training does resume this week, however please be mindful of the health and safety of our players and abide by our Heat Policy <click here to read>.

Take care out there and good luck for the rest of the season – remembering we have an extra couple of games this time before finals start, to bring the season into line with our school terms.

Upcoming referee course

  • Are you interested in knowing more about the rules of the game?
  • Don’t want to coach, but want to get involved in some other way?
  • Want to earn some spare cash on Saturdays?

Whatever the reason, there is no better way to show your interest in improving our competition, than getting involved with the referees.

There will be a Beginners Referee Course hosted by Broadmeadows Basketball Association coming up in July. Your expression of interest can be emailed to refereescourse@bigpond.com.

You must be a minimum of 14 years old to participate and the Referee program is very keen to get some mature age people (parents, older siblings etc) interested as well.

Once numbers are confirmed, dates can be set, then further information will be available on the BBA website.

Successful Team Manager and Coaches’ meeting held this week

We had a fantastic response to our Team Manager and Coaches’ meeting on Tuesday night this week ~ 70+ turned up and some positive feedback has been received about the night ~ most people learnt at least one new thing to help in managing our club. Some of the topics covered, include:

  • an update on our club financials, including how teams’ efforts contribute to the successful annual presentation day
  • lots of info from Wendy Parsons, our Junior Domestic Coordinator from the Broadmeadows Basketball Association (BBA)
  • covered a number of club policies – such as the Club Code of Conduct and our Team Manager and Coach duty statements
  • Working with Children (WWC) Check – it is a new policy of our club that all Team Managers, Coaches and Club Committee Members undertake a WWC Check – please contact us for more information or pick up a form at your local post office, and make sure you complete the final step and link your card with the Greenvale Grizzlies Basketball Club
  • the importance of sharing scoring task amongst team parents and the upcoming Scoring Clinic on 5 June – please make sure as many of your team members attend as possible – remember we have a scoring guide on this site
  • reminded everyone the great resources on this website, including coach and team manager resources, such as the links on the drills, training and plays page
  • reiterated the desire to have as many team members, including our children to enter your email address to sign up to this website and Like our Facebook page, to make sure we can communicate as efficiently as possible. If you have any great web content such as videos or basketball resources, we would love to add to the site. We also launched our new Social Media Policy
  • fundraising – talked about the importance of our annual Chocolate Drive and outlined two other fundraising programs – the Rebel Sports program and the launch of Meant 2 Be Celebration shop – both programs benefiting you as well as bringing financial contributions coming back to the club.
  • we also encouraged everyone to think about other sponsorship opportunities, such as local businesses sponsoring a team’s alternate/training tops so you don’t have to wear those smelly bibs, or supporting the administration of the club. Look out for a great new sponsorship initiative from one of our current sponsors, Madison’s Restaurant in Westmeadows.

If you need any further information, please do not hesitate in exploring our website or contacting one of the following key club contacts:

A big Grizzlies thanks to everyone who attended the meeting and making it such as successful night. Don’t forget the Annual General Meeting of the club will be conducted shortly – another opportunity to contribute and support in the management of our club.

Grand Final times and notes re rule changes for Grand Final

Congratulations to all those people who made the grand finals – your times and venues are attached below.

One very important thing to note for Finals is that Team sheets are written up with the players that qualify only. Regardless of the situation, DO NOT make any additions or changes to Players Names on the game sheet as automatic Team Disqualification could result. If you have any concerns please contact your Registrar or myself if there are any issues. Boy’s U8 to U12 – Lance Corby 0419330941, Boy’s U14 to U19 – Val Ceddia 0417227340 or all Girls – Shane Gillard 0400669714.

A few other things to note regarding Grand Finals are:

  •   Both Scoring Sheet and Score Board duties are performed by BBA appointed Scorers. As such there is no need for parents or Team Managers to score this week.
  •   All Grand Finals will be played on an hourly schedule beginning at 8:30am rather than the normal 50 minutes schedule through the regular season.
  •   Where two Greenvale Teams are playing off in a Grand Final, the team listed first MUST wear the bids to assist the BBA appointed Scorers. This affects the following teams:
  • U12 Boys Gunners
  • U14 Girls Superstars
  • U16 Boys Celtics
  •   Grand Final timing rules are slightly different to the rest of the season. Following is an outline of the key differences:
    •   Clock stops on all timeouts – the usual two in 1st half and two in 2nd half are available to be used
    •   Clock stops on every whistle in the last 3 minutes of the 2nd half
    •   If the game time is exhausted and the score is drawn, and extra 5 min game time will be played, until a winning result is attained.

Can Team Managers and Coaches please make yourself familiar with these changes to avoid both confusion and angst during the game. I would also suggest you inform your parents and supporters so they are aware of these rulings.

    •   Formal presentations for U10 ~ U14 are to be conducted in the Bar Area under the BRM1 main seating
    •   Formal Presentations for U16 ~ U19 will be conducted on their playing court directly after their games

In closing, good luck to the 23 teams that made Grand Finals and looking forward to see you all on Sunday 3rd March for the annual Greenvale Basketball Club Presentation Day.

Finals times and venues for this Saturday 23 Feb + it’s not cool to jump the back fence

Here are your times for finals this Saturday.

Please respect the Association and venue attendants by entering by the main doors – it is definitely not cool to come in the back doors – it is unfair to everyone and definitely not allowed and will be monitored more closely. Please advise your team members that the back doors are to remain closed at all times. We have venue supervisors at one entrance only so they can see who is entering and leaving at all times – this is to keep it a safe place for our families to enjoy.

Another important thing for finals is that team scoresheets are written up with the players that qualify only. Regardless of what the teams thoughts are, if you have a player in your team that is not listed on the sheet DO NOT make any additions to the sheet or play that player. You will find that the player has not signed the game sheets after the game or they have not been registered with the team correctly during the season. If you have any concerns please contact your Registrar before Saturday if there are any issues. Boy’s U8 to U12 – Lance Corby 0419330941, Boy’s U14 to U19 – Val Ceddia 0417227340 or all Girls – Shane Gillard 0400669714.

Door entry fee for young children

Some of our parents have asked – at what age do young non playing spectator children pay the entrance fee at Saturday domestic games?

The Broadmeadows Association have advised us that children under the age of 6 are admitted free of charge.

So – feel good that you are bringing them along and encouraging the younger ones into our game!!
